The GIMP versus Adobe Photoshop

The GIMP and Adobe Photoshop are both excellent image editing applications .  The latter is more suited to the professional photographer/image editor who requires advanced editing and prepress features, but it comes with a hefty price tag.

For the rest of us, The GIMP offers many of the same features found in its proprietary rival at no cost.  It will allow you to perform routine photo editing operations such as cropping, scaling, brightness and contrast adjustments and colour corrections.  In addition, you can create logos, buttons, and other graphics from scratch.

This makes The GIMP an ideal learning tool for the person entering the field of digital image editing.  It is user friendly, it can be readily obtained, and it will allow the user to familiarise themselves the principles of image editing without undue expense.  Should they find the need to transition to Photoshop at a later stage, the knowledge they have gained will stand them in good stead.
